Orchestrator Agent

An orchestrator agent is an AI agent whose job is to break a task into subtasks, assign them to specialized agents or tools, review the results, and assemble the final output.

What is an orchestrator agent?

An orchestrator agent is an AI agent that manages other agents. It receives the overall goal, breaks it into subtasks, decides which specialized agent or tool should handle each one, passes them the inputs they need, checks what comes back, and assembles the final result. It usually runs on a more capable model than the workers, because planning and judging quality are harder than executing a narrow step. In a multi-agent system, the orchestrator is the one component that sees the whole task.

The orchestrator rarely touches business systems directly. Its tools are the other agents. That keeps its permissions small and its prompt focused on coordination.

Orchestrator agent in practice

A collections agency uses an orchestrator to prepare accounts for a weekly call campaign. For each account, the orchestrator sends a lookup agent to pull the balance, payment history, and any disputes, a compliance agent to check contact restrictions and the state’s rules, and a drafting agent to prepare the call script. If the compliance agent reports a restriction, the orchestrator drops the account from the campaign and notes why. The collectors receive a queue that is already screened and documented.

What to watch for

  • Limit how many times the orchestrator can re-delegate a subtask, or a stubborn failure turns into an expensive loop.
  • Log the orchestrator’s plan and each assignment so a reviewer can see why a subtask was sent where it went.
  • Give the orchestrator a way to stop and ask a person when the workers disagree or return nothing usable.
