No Code

No code is an approach to building software through visual tools, forms, and prebuilt components instead of written programming, letting business users assemble applications, workflows, and AI agents themselves.

What is no code?

No code is a way of building software applications without writing programming code. The builder works in a visual tool, dragging steps onto a canvas, filling in forms, and connecting prebuilt blocks that represent data sources, conditions, and actions. The tool generates and runs the underlying logic. In AI, no-code tools let someone configure a chatbot, define an agent’s instructions and the tools it may call, build a document-processing workflow, or connect a model to a spreadsheet and an email inbox, all through configuration screens.

No code is one end of a spectrum. Low code sits in the middle, offering the same visual building with the option to add scripts where the blocks run out. Traditional development sits at the other end, with full flexibility and full engineering cost.

Why no code matters

Most useful AI automation in a mid-sized company is small, such as routing one kind of email, extracting fields from a form, or summarizing tickets every Friday. The people who understand those tasks sit in operations, finance, and customer service, and the engineering queue is long. No-code tools let a citizen developer build the automation directly, which shortens delivery from months to days for simple cases. The same accessibility creates governance problems. Automations built outside IT can hold credentials, move sensitive data, and take actions in systems of record with no review, which is how shadow AI takes root.

No code in practice

The operations manager at a regional accounting firm builds a client intake workflow with a no-code tool. New engagement letters arrive by email, a model extracts the client name, entity type, services, and fee, the workflow creates the client record in the practice management system, and a partner receives a summary to approve. No developer was involved. Six months later IT finds the workflow running under the manager’s personal login with write access to every client record. The firm moves it onto its governed AI platform, where it runs under a service identity with least privilege and its actions appear in the audit log.

What to watch for

  • Give no-code builders a sanctioned platform with managed identities and logging, so the approved path is easier than the shadow one.
  • Require an approval step before any no-code automation can write to a system of record.
  • Expect to rebuild. Successful no-code automations often outgrow the tool and need an engineering pass.
  • Ask how the tool handles errors, since visual flows often fail silently when an upstream field changes.
