Data Management

Data Engineer and Data Architect

A data architect designs how an organization's data is structured, stored, and connected, and a data engineer builds and runs the pipelines that move it. An AI program needs both roles.

Who are data engineers and data architects?

A data architect designs the structure of an organization’s data: which systems hold which records, how they connect, what the shared data model looks like, and where the data platform (a warehouse or lakehouse) sits. A data engineer builds and operates what the architect designs: the pipelines that extract data from the ERP, CRM, and ticketing systems, transform it, load it, test it, and keep it running every night.

The architect works in diagrams, standards, and decisions. The engineer works in code, SQL, orchestration tools, and monitoring. In a company of a few hundred people, one senior person often does both jobs.

Data engineer and data architect in practice

Question Data architect Data engineer
Main output Target architecture, data model, integration standards Working pipelines, tests, and the data they produce
Typical decision Where retrieval data for an assistant lives and how agents reach systems of record How a nightly load recovers when the source API times out
Busiest phase The first weeks of a program The whole life of the platform

On an AI program, the architect decides where training data, retrieval documents, and audit logs live and which paths an agent may use to read or change business systems. The engineer builds the feeds into the vector index, the feature tables, and the reporting layer, plus the validation and lineage capture behind them. In Kirk Tech Solutions engagements, the architecture work is concentrated at the start and the engineering work continues for the life of the platform, so the engineering role is the one to staff permanently.
